Athens highlights

There is too much to see and do in the buzzing city of Athens. Kick off at the starting point of it all, the Acropolis, with its 2,500 year old marble temples. Floodlit by night, the Acropolis is a rocky mound rising above Plaka. It is the birthplace of Athens, and crowned by three ancient temples, the best known being the Parthenon. Its towering columns have withstood the elements for over 2,500 years. The Parthenon remains the international symbol of Ancient Greek architecture.

Continue your way to the pretty cobbled streets of Plaka. Sitting in the shadow of the Acropolis, the Plaka is mostly pedestrianised and one of Athens' most pleasant neighbourhoods. Along with a jumble of restaurants, cafés and shops, it is home to archaeological sites, including the Tower of the Winds.

Southeast of the Acropolis you will find the temple of Olympian Zeus, also called the Olympieion. Though only a few columns remain of this temple, it does not take much imagination to realize that this was one monster of a building.

Move north across town to the world class National Archaeological Museum, packed with Ancient Greek marble statues, frescoes, jewellery and ceramics, near Victoria metro station. Alternatively, for a run through Greek artistic development from pre-history to the late 19th century, look in at the Benaki Museum, east of Syntagma.

These are just a few highlights of what this historical city has to offer. Come join us in Athens to explore this beautiful city together!
